Yakitori on St. Marks Place

Yakitori Taisho grills skewers at 9 St Marks Place in the East Village, on the same block as its old storefront. It opens at 5 PM every night and stays open until midnight, 1 AM on Friday and Saturday, and 11 PM on Sunday. The room is loud and busy, the tables are close together, and the smoke from the grill follows you home.

The Menu

The skewer list runs from chicken, heart, wing, skin, gizzard and liver to beef meatballs, beef tongue and pork belly, plus shiitake, shishito peppers, garlic, scallion, squid legs, shrimp, quail eggs, and bacon wrapped around asparagus or scallops. Two sets put ten skewers on a plate: set A is all chicken and set C is vegetables and seafood.

Beyond the grill there is tonkotsu and negi ramen, sashimi and seafood plates, rice balls plain or grilled, bento-style entrées, and a bowl of minced tuna over rice with an egg yolk. Sake, shochu, Japanese beer and shochu cocktails make up the drinks list.

Before You Go

On busy nights large groups get squeezed onto small tables. The 2018 menu added an 18% gratuity for parties of eight or more.
